The Festival has existed since 2004, organised by the Towarzystwo im. Witolda Lutosławskiego (Witold Lutosławski Society). The idea to hold a festival dedicated exclusively to Witold Lutosławski came about from the desire to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the composer's death. The Festival has a "chain" form, one of the Lutosławski's favourite forms of music i.e. is constructed from contrasting strands, which overlap like the links of a chain with intervals. The first three Festivals(2004-2006) showcased almost the entire collection of Witold Lutosławski's artistic achievements: beginning from his early works to the late, mature pieces, ranging from educational compositions and children's songs to hits of the 50's and 60's, penned under the pseudonym "Derwid", his entire chamber music works, as well as his interest in film and plastic arts. Additionally, the Lutosławski Youth Orchestra debuted at the second Festival with performances from outstanding young musicians from France, Spain, Holland, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and Poland. Heinz Holliger, oboe player, composer and conductor, for whom Lutosławski wrote Double Concerto for Oboe and Harp led the orchestra with accompanying soloists: Heinz and Ursula Holliger, Olga Pasiecznik, and Piotr Pławner. The Festival has taken a change in direction from solely presenting Witold Lutosławski's works and highlights the composer in the broader context of 20th and 21st century music. This new format has become possible due to cooperation with the International Vocal Festival La Voce in Bad Kissingen, Germany, and the David Oystrakch International Violin Competition in Odessa, Ukraine.
