Warsaw Autumn
Warsaw Autumn, the International Festival dedicated to contemporary music, is one of Poland's most prestigious music jamborees of international renown. For many years it was the only event of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe. It was first organised in 1956 thanks to the resourcefulness and initiative of two composers, Tadeusz Baird and Kazimierz Serocki. Legendary artists and composers from around the world have graced the Festival stage over the last decades. Nadia Boulanger was the Festival's first honorary guest. In the years to follow, Warsaw was visited by, among others, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Dymitr Szostakowicz, Pierre Boulez, Elliot Carter, John Cage, Benjamin Britten, Morton Feldman, and Terry Riley-fathers of American minimalism. The Festival is usually held in the second half of September and lasts for about 8 days.
