The Old Town churches house real treasures. You will find numerous monuments of sacred art, paintings, sculptures, goldsmiths' works of art, tapestries and embroideries, almost miraculously preserved. The Cathedral deserves special attention. Its history goes back to the early 14th century. This is where kings' coronations took place, and where the Constitution of 3rd May was sworn. The underground crypts contain the vaults of Mazovian knights, bishops, famous Poles and the last of the Polish Kings - Stanislaus Augustus Poniatowski.
Świętojańska Street leads from the Old Town Square Market to Castle Square (Plac Zamkowy), dominated by the Royal Castle. The Castle is one of the foremost elements of the reconstructed Old Town complex. This unique post-war architectural reconstruction was honoured by the entering of the Castle in UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage List. If you visit the Castle, do not miss the royal rooms, the court rooms and the Seym rooms
